چکیده
The Horizontal Branch (HB) morphology in the color – magnitude diagram of the Galactic globular clusters depends on many factors, and it is now firmly established that the so-called " Second Parameter " is not just the cluster age as claimed for several years. As a part of a wider program devoted to the search for the physical processes driving the Horizontal Branch Morphology, we re-address here the problem of the extension of blue HB tails by introducing a new quantitative observable, B2/B + R + V , where B2 = {N umber of HB stars with (B − V) 0 < −0.02}. We demonstrate that the environmental conditions within a cluster clearly affect its HB morphology, in the sense that, in general, the higher the cluster central density the higher is the relative number of stars populating the most blue region of its HB.

We review the most outstanding issues related to the study of the morphology of the Horizontal Branch (HB) in the Color–Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Globular Clusters and its use as age indicator. It is definitely demonstrated (see also Bolte, this meeting) that age cannot be the only 2nd-P driving the HB morphology. Other candidate 2nd-Ps are briefly examined, with special attention to the p...

This paper presents a statistical explanation of filament formation in the galactic atomic hydrogen. We claim that even in the absence of dynamical factors the Gaussian field corresponding to the measured values of the spectrum of random density should develop filamentary structure, the existence of which has long been claimed. Therefore this paper relates the observations of filaments by Versc...

Variations in the number of globular clusters per unit galaxy luminosity, which is the specific frequency, and the mass of globular clusters per unit total available mass, are reviewed. Correlations with galaxy luminosity and morphology, and with the properties of the associated galactic clusters are discussed, as are the color distributions of globular cluster populations. Several models for t...

The GRAPE-4, the world's fastest computer in 1995-1997, has produced some major scientific results, through a wide diversity of large-scale simulations in astrophysics. Applications have ranged from planetary formation, through the evolution of star clusters and galactic nuclei, to the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
